Interstices of Sound and Light: Weaving Taipei's Memory through Eight-Channel Interaction
"Interstices
of Sound and Light" is a musical inscription of Taipei’s urban memory,
exploring the interplay of sound, time, and space through pipa, cello,
and eight-channel electronic music. Inspired by Taipei’s sonic
fragments—morning rain, the clamor of night markets, the nocturnal hum
of low frequencies—these memory shards, chaotic yet orderly, warm yet
solitary, resemble half-open doors, each leading to larger, endless
recollections. The piece captures the fusion of the city’s nature and
metropolis, history and modernity, delineating the layers and flow of
memory.
The work employs
an eight-channel spatial design, utilizing ChucK software to create
real-time interactive soundscapes, integrating transformed urban and
instrumental samples into live pipa and cello performances. ChucK’s
real-time algorithms enable dynamic transformations of urban samples and
soundfield variations, allowing sounds to shift between whispers and
surges, simulating Taipei’s pulse. A live electronic improviser,
integrated into the performance, contributes spontaneous sonic gestures,
enriching the interactive soundfield with authentic urban resonance.
The
“interstices” symbolize the fractures and ambiguities of time, while
“light and shadow” metaphorize the city’s flow and transformation. Pipa
and cello, bridging tradition and contemporaneity, converse with the
electronic layer, forming a sonic palimpsest. This presentation explores
how "Interstices of Sound and Light" weaves Taipei’s memory through
eight-channel interaction, blending technical innovation with cultural
introspection, and invites listeners to reflect: what memories linger in
the sonic crevices of your city?
